And finally there it is. “60 Minutes”, a television news magazine, confirms what many have known for YEARS. The placebo effect is AS EFFECTIVE as taking antidepressant drugs. Yes, YOU have the power to heal. The power always lies within you. It is not that pharmaceuticals are bad or “traditional”, “conventional” methods of healing are “bad”. It’s about what works for you. And if you’ve been uusing tools and your condition is not working, perhaps it’s time for some new tools.

Step on the Path of Power with me this spring where I share the tools that helped me heal myself from grief, PTSD, depression, and suicidal thoughts to a life of purpose and joy. It does not have to take time. Sometimes it does take time, but it does not have to. What a Path of Power does however require is the courage for you to finally tap into your power within.

To find the tools that work for you, it is key that you find easy-to-learn and practical ways that address the integration of body, mind and spirit in your everyday life. The issue that I have been noticing is that there are very few who truly teach tools for the spirit. Luminous Warrior offers the Path of Power (POP) Program to address exactly that problem. Not only does the program include tools for your body, mind, and emotions, it also teaches you practical tools for your spirit, for the energy, the consciousness, that is as much part of you as the rest. In 9 individual workshops, the Path of Power program teaches you lessons, techniques, practices and tools that can heal and strengthen you physically, bring balance and power to your emotions, increase your mental stability and focus, and help you find YOUR way of connecting with your spirit and life larger than you. Contact Luminous Warrior to find out more about POP and how it can help you find the path to heal and transform your life.

Women’s Media Center (WMC) has formed a powerful new initiative called Women Under Siege. With Gloria Steinem at the forefront, Women Under Siege is a new project of WMC that “documents how rape and other forms of sexualized violence are used as tools in genocide and conflict throughout the 20th century and into the 21st.” Through Women Under Siege, WMC is bringing focus to understanding the genesis and methodology of mass sexual assaults in past conflicts. A formal knowledge-base will help formulate plans of action to reduce the occurrence of mass sexual assault, and lead to the establishment of international institutions for prosecuting systematic campaigns of sexual violence.

Source: Womanstats.org

The work of Women’s Media Center through Women Under Siege is another example of individuals and organizations combating the systematic use of sexual violence as tools of intimidation, reprisal, and genocide. Global Journalists Combating Sexual Assault is a past posting that describes the steep rise of sexual assault being committed against female journalists as a means of terror and retribution. Acts of violence against journalists in general is climbing, but female journalists are being specifically targeted with sexual violence. From natural disasters in Haiti to the violent conflicts of the Arab uprisings throughout the Middle East and North Africa, female journalists around the world have become a significant presence among field correspondents, and as a result, are increasingly targets for reprisal.

High profile assaults like the one against Lara Logan, a correspondent for the television news magazine 60 Minutes, are brining to the forefront the rising prevalence of sexual violence against journalists as these women increasingly speak out. Just as WMC works to raise awareness of and take action against systematic campaigns of sexual violence against women, various organizations like the Committee to Protect Journalists are seeking education, training, and initiatives to combat the violence against journalists.

On his website, Dr. Isaac Elias, M.D., L.Ac., M.S. has posted on article about How to Stay Healthy This Winter. Dr. Elias is an “Integrative Practitioner” who utilizes an integration of Western and complementary protocols, botanical and nutritional therapies, mind-body medicine, and multiple healing systems to prescribe the most appropriate treatments for each individual patient. He leads an integrative medical practice at Amitabha Medical Clinic and Healing Center in Sebastopol, California. Some of the tips prescribed by Dr. Elias are quoted below:

Meditation

Winter time is an excellent time for retrospection, meditation and exploration of deeper issues. To do this, we need to slow down. In fact, we are usually so busy that we are not even aware of how neurotic our thoughts and actions are. When we slow down through meditation, relaxation, or simply taking some time off, we may be overwhelmed by the recognition of how fast and full our lives really are. If we can take the time to truly relax and slow down, the winter season can provide a profound opportunity for internal insight and deep introspection. This process may naturally give rise to “stuff” that is stuck under the surface of our mundane activities; issues, thoughts or patterns we may have been avoiding with our ongoing business. Simply allow these issues to arise, unfold and slip away as you calm your mind with simple meditation and breathing practices. Allowing this process to unfold during the winter season can have a much different quality than the peeling process that we engage in during our spring and fall cleanse. The end result may be similar but different organ systems, emotions and patterns are involved. This level of mind/heart medicine is an integral part of true integrative health and the winter season is an excellent time to experience meditation’s holistic benefits.

Organs

According to the principles of TCM, winter is associated with the element of water and influences the health of the kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, bones (including bone marrow) and teeth. In TCM, the kidneys are the primary source of vitality, energy and heat as well as vital essence. Energy is drawn from this source during times of stress and anxiety or when the body requires healing. During the coldness of winter, it is critical to maintain healthy kidneys and adrenal glands through proper diet and supplementation, good hydration, as well as energetic practices such as yoga and Tai Chi, which help keep your core warm and well nourished.

Emotions

According to TCM, winter is inactive, cold and damp in nature, relating to feelings such as fear and depression which tend to exert more influence during this season. In Western medicine, many people are diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a particular form of depression/anxiety that occurs during the darker months primarily due to lack of sunshine exposure. Women often experience this condition more than men and it results in poor mood, lack of energy, irritability, weight gain due to overeating and fatigue. In addition to supplementing with Vitamin D-3, I recommend opening your curtains during the day to allow any sunlight to come in and taking brisk walks (in the sunshine if possible) to improve circulation and blood flow. Meditation practices which help to calm the mind and heart are also extremely valuable during the winter season.

Many of the recommendations by Dr. Elias are great for any time of the year. Luminous Warrior offers an integrated, full-spectrum approach for maintaining the health and wellness of the mind, body, and spirit. Programs and classes in fitness, shamanic healing, self defense, yoga, and meditation are all available to assist your journey to full transformation and empowerment at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. Come to any of our drop-in or intro class to discover your personal path.

Among other emotions, fear is a pervasive feeling that permeates throughout the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). In a recent study published in Social Psychology Quarterly entitled “Managing Emotional Manhood: Fighting and Fostering Fear in Mixed Martial Arts”, Christian A. Vaccaro, Douglas P. Schrock, and Janice M. McCabe use the world of MMA fighting to study how gender perceptions play into the mechanisms utilized by people to manage fear. In particular, the study attempts to portray how a person’s methods of managing emotions, in this case fear, intersects with perceptions of gender identity. The overarching hypothesis suggests that a person’s selected method in managing fear will adhere to what society considers an “acceptable” response for the gender the person identifies with; in this case “masculinity”. The entire study synopsis can be read here: http://www.asanet.org/images/journals/docs/pdf/spq/Dec11SPQFeature.pdf

Vaccaro and his colleagues’ decision to survey mixed-martial arts fighters is definitely an interesting choice. The inherent risks of stepping into an enclosed space (a cage or ring) to engage in physical violence with another person will definitely elicit feelings of fear in the average person, and MMA fighters exist and are often promoted in a culture of “hyper-masculinity”. With that foundation, the researchers surmise that the devices utilized by MMA fighters to manage their fears (or many fighters would call it nerves) is interpreted as “indicative of ultimate manhood”. Thus, mixed martial arts fighters are prototypical of Managing Emotional Manhood.

After 121 interviews conducted with various fighters over a 2-year period, there are not many surprises to the methods utilized by fighters in dealing with the fears of competition-based violence. According to this study, the two greatest fears of cage fighters are serious bodily injury and losing in front of others. The researchers categorize the fighters’ fear management methods as scripting, framing, and othering.

These tools will already be familiar to most people who have had to deal with fear-inducing situations; even situations outside of violent conflict. Scripting is the attempt to preemptively manifest order despite the anticipated chaos of violence by planning and creating a game plan for the match. The unpredictable nature of fighting is a significant source of fear as physical violence has a dynamic fluidity that can generate unforeseeable and potentially catastrophic consequences. A game plan gives a fighter a focused strategy in attempting to manage the chaos and the potential outcome, and also helps establish an anchor in the rational mind when fear-induced panic threatens to overwhelm. Framing is another device utilized by MMA fighters. Framing is used to mentally recast a fight into something other than an unpredictable force of violence. As common ways to frame a fight, combatants tell themselves, “this fight is no different than what I do every day in the gym.” or “no matter what happens, this is a great experience.” Finally, the study classifies othering as the process by which a fighter separates himself from his opponent by elevating himself as naturally superior. Imagining a more powerful, virtual version of oneself and/or casting the opponent with perceived negative qualities are processes fighters go through to manage their own fears.

The conclusions drawn from Managing Emotional Manhood are debatable, but some aspects of the devices used by fighters do have application in street-based self defense scenarios as well as inside the cage. For instance, similar to what is accomplished for competitive fighters, scripting is commonly employed in self defense training. Movements in defensive tactics are repeatedly practiced so that they become reflexive reactions should an attack actually occur. Also, Othering does not have to involve perceiving everyone else as inferior, but creating a virtual, powerful self that is fully empowered can be an effective method of risk reduction against violent assaults.

As written about in previous posts, there are numerous differences between training for competitive fights and training for self defense. Many factors such as Awareness and understanding the Decision to Fight should be included in any training, and addressing the mental and emotional components of self defense are critical to a quality program. Luminous Warrior has many modalities and programs to transcend fears without stepping into a cage or ring. Self Defense Classes, Fitness Regimens, Luminous Yoga, and Shamanic Energy Medicine are all available to find your path to empowerment. Take a look at the rest of the Luminous Warrior website to find out which programs are best for you.

Exercise, fitness regimens, and measures to enhance physical endurance have many significant benefits to the physical body. If fitness programs are consistently followed, the gains can easily be seen and felt. As Gretchen Reynolds reports in her article, “Exercise as Housecleaning for the Body”, the physical benefits of exercise may go even deeper than previously realized. Physical fitness not only helps strengthen and enhance the endurance of the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems, it also helps cleanse the body down to the cellular level.

Reynolds’ article summarizes a recent study that suggests physical exertion increases the rate at which the body cleanses itself of the debris that is produced during normal metabolic functions. Research conducted by scientists at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and published in last month’s edition of Nature, studied the process by which cells remove or even recycle debris such as “broken or misshapen proteins, invasive viruses or bacteria, and worn-out, broken-down cellular components.” The research explains how the cleansing process is normally accomplished.

“…cells diligently sweep away this debris. They even recycle it for fuel. Through a process with the expressive name of autophagy, or “self-eating,” cells create specialized membranes that engulf junk in the cell’s cytoplasm and carry it to a part of the cell known as the lysosome, where the trash is broken apart and then burned by the cell for energy.”

Scientist who study the body’s metabolism are increasingly looking at the process of autophagy as being a critical area of study for finding the causes to some common diseases and ailments. If the body loses its ability to cleanse and recycle the cellular detritus, then this can cause cells to die or malfunction. Metabolic researchers are investigating the possibility that a breakdown in the autophagy mechanism may contribute to the development of a range of diseases, including diabetes, muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s and cancer, and the slow-down in autophagy at middle-age may contribute to the body’s general ageing process.

Gretchen Reynolds’ article highlights that through a series of laboratory experiments, scientists are speculating that physiological stress through physical exertion may cause the autophagy process to accelerate and improve the body’s ability to efficiently clear and recycle the cellular waste. Scientists suggest that the increase in autophagy may be a key component to explaining the significant health benefits of exercise and physical activity.

Past blog postings have raised awareness of the benefits that exercise and physical activity have not only on the physical body, but also the mind and spirit. In a series of postings including Raising Worker Wellness: Self Defense, Fitness and Healing; Fitness, Self Defense, and the Brain; and Self Defense: Strengthening Body, Mind…and Soul, it is shown that there is a significant body of scientific research that shows physical fitness as an important factor to developing and maintaining a healthy body and mind. Luminous Warrior, however, also maintains that physical wellness also contributes to complete holistic and integrated well-being by helping to reduce stress and releasing trauma. By engaging the body in physical exertion and stress through activities such as fitness and conditioning programs or self defense classes, the body can be cleansed of potential toxins that result from repeated exposure to stressful environments and traumatic experiences. This cleansing takes place at the very cellular level of the body.

Luminous Warrior offers a variety of programs and classes that give you the opportunity to experience the benefits of the cleansing process for yourself. Warrior Fitness, Luminous Yoga, Warrior Self Defense, Shamanic Healing, and much more offer a variety of ways to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit, and bring you to new, profound levels of health and wellness. Take a look at our website and explore our class schedule and programs to find out what path is best for you.

I don’t carry sticks or knives with me, why is this practical? Where am I going with Kali? It’s very pretty movement, but is it effective?

These questions and more commonly come-up when people first hear about Kali, Escrima/Eskrima, Arnis, or other similar systems of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). Kali is a Filipino martial art system with roots in military warfare, but has evolved into a combat art for urban application…a hand-to-hand combat system with a central focus of being a devastating and efficient form of personal protection.

Many traditional martial arts from other parts of the world that have migrated to U.S. training centers have morphed into competitive sport fighting and/or a series of demonstration routines. Conversely, Kali, and particularly SinaTirsiaWali (STW) Kali, has not lost the commitment to being a combat art focused on self defense. Evolving in the rough urban environments of the Philippines, Kali utilizes weapons from at the absolute initiation of training. Sticks, blades, edged weapons, and other everyday objects, utilizing weapons for self defense is integral to this Filipino martial arts training. Obviously, the laws of the Philippines governing the use of weapons for self defense tactics are different from the laws in the United States (Martial Law: The Legal Gauntlet of Self Defense Training), but the need for no-nonsense, tactical application and the mindset necessary to effectively defend yourself do not differ across borders or jurisdictions.

Kali delivers elements to self defense training that are found in few other systems (How Complete is Your Arsenal?). It has become world-renown for its speed, power, and visceral effectiveness. In particular, the combat art of SinaTirsiaWali Kali, is a close-combat FMA system that teaches effective self protection tactics through the use of blade, impact weapon, and empty-hand combatives. STW Kali also teaches the individual to use hands, elbows, knees, feet, and many types of everyday objects for personal protection. Many practitioners also experience improved tactical speed, power, conditioning, and agility in their martial arts training. Taught to private civilians, law enforcement, and military personnel around the world, Kali is about more than just learning “techniques” and clicking sticks together. In STW Kali, it’s about developing your ability to “react, defend, and survive” by emphasizing how to EFFECTIVELY and PRACTICALLY utilize armed and empty-hand combat to defend against attackers of all skill levels.

Skillfully utilizing weapons for self defense and personal protection is not an inherently easy skill-set to develop. Becoming proficient in Kali takes consistent practice and training. The skills are not based on instinctive movements, but they do sharpen the ability to automatically react against an immediate danger, and this capability takes time and training. Also, even though many practitioners may not realize it, learning to utilize weapons for self defense should also track the mental, emotional, and potential legal components as well. If the focus is on self defense, the training needs to go beyond how to employ weapons in familiar, comfortable training environments of drills and partner exercises. Training for personal security requires going to the street-level realities of self defense scenarios and they need to be understood and indoctrinated into martial arts and self defense training programs.

Luminous Warrior brings all of these factors and more into its self defense training programs (Krav Maga and Kali: The Weapons of Close Combat). Take a look at the rest of the Luminous Warrior website to find out more about the classes offered, and be sure to register with our mailing list to get the latest events and developments at Luminous Warrior.

In a recent news article, it was highlighted that a robber “walked into a Comfort Inn and …pulled a gun on the clerk.” At the same time, two mixed martial arts fighters who were in town for the World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship decided to jump in and subdue the robber.

While this news excited some martial artists, left others feeling like “justice was served”, and yet others wondering what was so newsworthy about the story to begin with since the moves didn’t show any “real” martial art skills, what’s even more relevant is to examine the risks these martial artists took in jumping in to a scenario that, luckily, turned out well for most involved.

As was highlighted by senior instructor and self defense expert Cary Ingram in recent posts (Armed Assault: Weapons and Self Defense Tactics-The Intro and Warrior’s Intent: Combat vs. Sport), there is a big difference between mixed martial arts and self defense, and it is important that anyone interested in a program be sure to explore the reasons and intent behind their own training, and match those to the training center that they choose to train with.

What is worth highlighting in this article are the factors that one must consider before engaging in a real-world act of violence with potential life and death consequences. Too often, mixed martial arts fighters confuse their art with self defense, and they are not aware of, nor physically, mentally and emotionally prepared, to deal with the inherent risks and consequences of their actions.

Many martial artists fall into the rescuer syndrome: wanting to do the right thing, feeling strong and capable, and perhaps also having some ego in wanting to protect others because of their “superior” skills. In reality, the more you know about real-world violence, the less you want to fight. The more you know about the risks and dangers that can happen in street-level scenarios, the more certain you become about what your value system truly is. You are more willing to part with trivial possessions or even a slap on the face and name-calling, and simply walk away, with your life still intact.

In the scenario reported-on in this article, there are several things that are worth considering:

Attackers are not all equal. Most of the time, robbers truly are just out for money or valuables. The gun or knife is used as a tool of intimidation. Their intent is to get a resource of perceived value, and quickly retreat from the scene. Obviously, the scenario is much different when confronted with a murderer or rapist. So the question remains, did the rescuers believe that the robber was going to kill the clerk, abduct the clerk, or rape the clerk, which would add more justification to the action they took?

Money in a business is usually insured. Even if it’s not, it is replaceable. Your life is not. By jumping on an adrenalized robber, not only did the “rescuers” put themselves at risk, they also put the clerk and other bystanders at increased risk of injury or death. A risk that may not have existed before. Were the rescuers aware of that?

Did the rescuers know for sure that there were no accomplices inside or outside the hotel that could have made the scenario worse? Or were they assuming that there would only be one? In self defense, one of the biggest risks is that you don’t know how many people are involved. There could be many, or just one. That is why the objective is to stay on your feet for as long as possible and end the assault as viciously and as quickly as one can. If the robber did have an accomplice who saw that his buddy had been taken down, what if the accomplice decided to walk in with his gun and kill the two rescuers? Again, did the rescuers consider such a scenario before jumping in?

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. There are so many factors that can go wrong in a real-world scenario. Plus, attacker motivation, risk assessment, and intuition are key in making the decision to fight. Can the attacker be talked down? Is what the attacker wants worth the fight? Is your life at risk or the life of someone you care about? Are the attacker’s motives murder, abduction or rape? What is your gut instinct your intuition, telling you? These are some of the questions that worth running through your head, and you should be clear about what is worth fighting for with an attacker who is ready, prepared, and committed to get what they want.

In self defense, not only do you have to put ego aside. For the sake of survival, you may also have to put aside what is commonly perceived as “right” and “wrong”. Sure, being traumatized, injured, anxious, scared, or terrified after an assault are possibilities. However, those are things that can be dealt with in the aftermath through proper self care and a solid support system, as is provided by Luminous Warrior’s programs such as Shamanic Healing and Path of Power. However, you have to remember that the objective in defending against an assault is about pure survival, and not preservation of ego or self-esteem. Unless you are willing to risk severe injury to yourself and make that decision for others, engaging in a violent situation is not a consideration.

Ultimately, only you can make the decision for yourself about what is worth risking your life for. Unless you know YOUR answer, which, by the way, may change for you on a day-to-day basis, you are not ready to make a decision, even less to jump-in. Too many fights start because of ego. Ego and self-esteem can be rebuilt. Your life or that of others cannot. Before you find yourself in a violent situation, you must run scenarios through your head and have a plan; you must know what is worth fighting for with the risk of serious bodily injury and possibly death; you must be aware of potential variables that are prevalent in a street-fight situation; you must be willing to take on the responsibility of your actions; you must know about differentiating types of attackers and motivations; and you must develop clear intuition so you can make life-and-death decisions instantly.

The intent of this article is not to discourage bystanders form stepping up, and stepping in, but to raise awareness about the factors, mindset, skills, and variables that are involved when you or someone else decides to step into the rescuer role. In fact, too often bystanders do nothing, so it is encouraging to see those who do take action! Just be sure you are prepared and have done your homework. Have a solid training foundation to decide for yourself whether stepping in or stepping back is the best course of action in any given scenario.

To make the decision to fight, any solid self defense program will cover the different types and mentalities of attackers in realistic training scenarios. Any true self defense program will teach avoidance and running away among the first options in self defense, and fighting as last resort. Any comprehensive training program will also include in its training practical tools to hone your intuition so you can make decisions more quickly and with more confidence, and tools to restore your self esteem and sense of worth if you ever are attacked. A solid training program such as Luminous Warrior’s Warrior Self Defense program will better prepare you to make that important decision to fight, by honing your skills on all levels –mental, physical, and emotional.
