The article featured in the New York Times, How Exercise Benefits the Brain, features a series of scientific studies that attempts to discover how exercise increases mental functioning along with the physical.  This particular study focused on increased production of a protein known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which is known to promote the health of nerve cells.  The studies show that exercise and other strenuous activity increases production of BDNF and may be a catalyst for improved mental performance, and slow down the degradation of mental capacity as people age.  As pointed out in past blog postings, numerous other studies have looked at additional factors that may also play a role in the link between physical exercise and the brain.
